NMF’s Packaging Strategy

FROM PLASTIC TO PAPER

NMF reduces waste and decreases plastic use with new packaging solutions for all mops ♻

From 2025, Denmark will implement the EU directive on extended producer responsibility for packaging, ensuring that significantly more packaging is reused or recycled. By 31 August 2024, companies are required to register and report their packaging usage. NMF is registered with Emballageretur for producer responsibility for packaging in accordance with the legislation.

NMF has always had a strong commitment to the green transition. As a manufacturer, we are fully aware of the new packaging regulations coming into effect in 2025. These regulations require producers to register the packaging they use and take responsibility for the costs associated with managing the waste generated by that packaging. We are therefore fully prepared to meet these upcoming requirements.

For NMF, this represents a clear opportunity to take the lead and implement concrete changes in our packaging to reduce our environmental impact while also meeting future requirements. Importantly, these changes do not affect product logistics (packaging units) or item numbers.

The purpose of the producer responsibility is to:
Innovation: Reduce our packaging usage by developing better solutions
Increase actual recyclability of our packaging through mono-material solutions
Rethink packaging design: Develop more environmentally friendly packaging

NMF is switching to mono-material packaging to make recycling easier

All NMF mops get new 100% paper packaging

At NMF, we have dedicated significant resources and time to prepare for upcoming regulatory changes. As part of this effort, we have decided to replace the plastic bags around our standard mops with paper bands. These recyclable paper bands will be introduced on our OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 products starting August 1, 2024. This step is part of a broader initiative to reduce plastic use in our packaging, and we extended the change to all our Swan-labelled mops from January 2025. This means that now in 2025, all packaging for mops are made in 100% monomaterial from paper.

🔁 The new packaging is made from mono-material with clear recycling symbols printed directly on it, making recycling and sorting as easy as possible. Since the packaging is mono-material, all parts can be sorted as paper. You can also easily order your own symbols to use with your waste sorting systems.

Packaging change on all NMF mops reduces annual waste by 53% in 2024

As an NMF dealer, you can always be confident that you are among the first to implement environmental initiatives within our category, as we aim to make it easy to purchase and (re)use professional cleaning tools. By introducing changes to our packaging, we expect to significantly reduce our waste. The anticipated annual waste reduction from switching from plastic bags to strong, durable paper bands is 53%.

Our efforts do not stop here. We will continue to evaluate and update our packaging to ensure we remain at the forefront of innovation. We see this as an ongoing journey and are committed to staying a leader in the industry’s transition toward more sustainable practices.

100% paper packaging makes recycling easy ♻

Mono-material packaging is easier to sort – and reduces CO2 for a better climate

With the new mono-material packaging, it becomes easier for consumers to reduce plastic use and waste, while also simplifying correct waste sorting. Previously, the plastic bag and attached label had to be sorted separately as plastic and paper. With the new packaging, this cumbersome process is a thing of the past. The plastic is replaced by paper bands secured with paper tape, meaning all parts of the packaging can be sorted as paper waste – making recycling straightforward. It’s a win-win for both consumers and the environment.

This newly developed mop packaging will reduce consumer waste by more than 250,000 bags annually.

At NMF, we stay up-to-date within our niche and are among the first to implement innovative solutions, as we aim to lead the way in optimizing and developing solutions for the climate. One of our recent initiatives was the update of our ECO mops packaging in spring 2024, where we replaced plastic bags with recyclable cardboard boxes. This not only reduces our plastic consumption but also improves handling and optimizes logistics.

All decisions come with trade-offs. While moving away from plastic may involve some practical challenges, we have made a conscious choice for the benefit of the environment. Importantly, these changes will not affect product logistics (packaging units) or item numbers.
